‘Bend it like Beckham’ – watched this movie after long time with my
daughter and we laughed out and enjoyed the movie together (PG13 - parental
guidance is required :)). That’s one movie I want Esther to watch
again probably after couple of years. I am sure many of you have already seen
or at least heard about this movie. How a Jesminder (Jess) an Indian origin,
British girl – Jess dreams of playing soccer
professionally, like her hero David Beckham, when her orthodox Punjabi family is completely against
her ‘showing bare legs in front of strangers’ :) The movie is about how Jess bends rules around
her to play football and follow her
dream.
Though a light hearted movie – it addresses many social issues like –
Role of Girl/Women in family/society, about sexual orientation, about
unorthodox choices one makes in life, about family bonding, father/mother -
daughter relationship, relationship with friends and colleagues. It’s an
evergreen movie and no matter how many times you watch this movie it still tickles
you – Absolutely lovely movie by Gurinder Chadha! Most of her films
explore the lives of Indians living in England. The other movie which I have watched is 'Bride and Prejudice' is which I didn't enjoy as much as BILB. Common theme among her
work showcases the trials of Indian women living in England and how they must
reconcile their converging traditional and modern cultures. I observed that the movies I have watched are like simple quirky comedies about Indian women but they actually
address many social and emotional issues faced by women.
