In recent past many people have asked me if
I am a ‘Religious’ person . My usual light hearted answer is I am church goer ,
love the songs/hymns and that Jesus
Christ is Super Star. I do get surprised when this question is thrown on me. We
were brought up in a very ‘secular’ environment of Army/Defence campuses, where
ours would be the only (most of the time) Christian family in the whole campus.
I or even my elder brother have never attended any ;Sunday School’ or
‘Catechism’ classes and there was time when i used to believe that I knew more
about other religions than Christianity.
It
was only after moving down to Kerala that I started going to church regularly ,
but never enjoyed or participated much as I could not follow Malayalam much. It
was only after going to Bangalore and thanks to St Patricks church , that I
actually started enjoying going to church and started participating in the
service and became regular church goer :) It became part of the routine, like
daily jogging and weekend badminton was must in my life then so was going to
church. Missing it was like missing something good in life. I still believe it
was not because of any ‘religious’ sentiment
-- it was more because of the environment of the church, the choir, the
people and the to some extent the priest and the service which used to be very
crisp , short and simple which made me go there every Sunday or sit there for
sometime even on a regular weekday , the doors where most of the time Open!
It was only after my marriage that i came to
know about quite a few ‘religious’ aspect of Christainity, but then I don’t
want to talk about it now. What I want to say about is how in last 10-15 years
I have realized that Jesus was one Absolute Super Star , and why even though i
am comfortable with and in other
religions and respect traditions and
culture of other religions (especially Hinduism) but what I want is to follow
and understand ‘Jesus’ . Though I
respect and follow the ‘order’ of church on how and what Christian life should
be , but then I do question lot of things about ‘Church’. What I realize is the
Charisma of what Jesus taught and did in his life – My take – He was one hell
of a Rebel of his time who knew history of of his people/tribe , knew his
Jewish traditions and lifestyle , knew where reforms were required, knew how reforms could be done , and knew what he
has to do - more importantly what he has
to do for others. ...
