Happen to see 'Nil Battey Sannata' which equates to 0/0 literally
meaning "Good for nothing" Hindi movie on Doordarshan. I watched this
movie with my daughter who found it little difficult to follow the typical 'UP
wali hindi' but enjoyed the movie.
‘Engineer ka beta Engineer, Doctor ka beta Doctor, Bai ki Beti Bai’ &
‘Garib ka koi sapna nahi hota’ these were some of the dialogues which stayed on
with me at the end of the movie. Nil Battey sannata is more like Children’s
movie or Women empowerment themed movie, which tells a simple story of a
working class single mother ‘Chanda’ and her 15 yr old daughter ‘Apeksha’ who
is suppose to be getting ready for her crucial 10th class board
examination. Btw ‘Apeksha’ means ‘expectation’ Chanda who could not clear her
10th exams, wants/expects her daughter to get through 10th
with good marks, but realises that ‘Apeksha’ has no such wish and is very weak
in mathematics. To challenge Apeksha – Chanda through her employer Dr. Diwan’s
recommendation joins her daughter’s school and class and thus begins the
challenge for Apeksha to outdo her mother in maths.
The movie is brilliantly taken and actors are amazing. There is not even
a single character in the movie you would miss observing and each character
leaves a long lasting impression in your mind. A must watch for children and
parents – beautifully shows and brings out the wish of every parent that their
child should do better than them and at the same time how to make your child
realise the potential and bring out the best from them. The movie also
advocates ‘Adult literacy’ inspiring adults who had left their studies in
between to pick up education from where they had left – ‘jab jago tab savera’
