Security Guards: Guarding the nation?

What goes in your mind when you see a security guard in front of any building say school, office, flats, villas, church etc ? When I look at them they look as if they are the National Security Force guys, safeguarding the Nation, but a little interaction with them and you know why they are still standing in front of big gate, because they cannot do anything better than standing in front of a gate like a Scarecrow. With quite a few experiences in recent past the conclusion I have come to is ‘People who have absolutely no brains stand in front of the Gates’ No offence intended , and I am sure there are absolutely brainless people in almost any profession , but in Security guard role (at least in Kerala) they are quite uniformly brainless :( …

Security at Retail shops – to be specific here ‘Big Bazaar’ they will stand as if they own the place and look at you as if you are trespasser. And by chance you have to get inside to settle discrepancies in bill or change any defective product, then you will see their true colours – I – ‘ There is discrepancy in bill have to meet the customer care counter’ The counter is just 2 steps behind him He who stands at the exit door, He – ‘You cannot get in from exit door, you have to go from the entry door’ – Entry door is just 10 steps apart from exit door ! I –repeat the same thing to the Entry gate security guy He ‘You cannot get inside with the things’ , I ‘But I have to get the refund or another piece and only if I show the bill and product will I get it’ He taking the bill goes through the bill – I looking At him and by now irritated ask ‘ So what did you understand after reading the bill? Can you solve the problem? Why cant you just do your duty of standing at the door and find somebody who understands the problem?’ – Offended He does not say anything and takes the bill inside I ‘Hey Hey where are you going with the bill’ – He comes back and says, I have given it to concern people !! Anyway the customer care guy comes and asks me the problem , I give him a brief and he asks me to get inside with my item through the Exit door and I get the refund after waiting for 20 mins.

At school – Every year the security guard change and every year I guess they are given the same training – hence they all behave the same way – follow the book , without analysing the situation – let it be rush hour time, or after school time – and if you ask something they will have only one answer – we have been told this way only. After school. When the school ends and there is rush of vehicles to get into the parking grounds, only OUT gate will be open – for entry and exit ; and after school hours , when you have to pick your child after Basketball/karate/music class only IN gate will be open for entry and exit !

Security at hospitals – Another irritating irrational group , the lesser you say about them the better, you end wasting your energy trying to reason it out with them when you are accompanying a patient. They will hardly do what they are suppose to do, like helping the patient get a wheel chair while getting down from vehicle to go to ward, or stopping some irresponsible driver from honking in front of the ward , the only thing they would know is stopping and asking people for ‘pass’ and if you are well dressed and walk with an air of confidence, he wont ask you that also.

Security at flats or Villas – You ask for any Residents flat number – most of the time they wont have any idea. Places where you have know the details when you give the details, he might give you the key of apartment thinking you are one of the PG in the apartment! And when you say ‘No - Visitor for 11C’ He will say 11th floor, Oh you will thank him for giving that information, anyway you were not sure whether 11C was in 11th floor or 13th floor …..

Then I thought about it ‘Security Guard mentality’ anybody can become security guard (well I am not talking about the bodyguard /bouncer type security guards here) because most of us behave like one at different stages of our life … as mother, as sister, as employer, as a mentor, you can think of so many different roles you play --- trying to follow just the rule books not thinking or questioning the logic behind it ….. and then I tell myself , Security guard he toh hai – ‘Dil Pe Matt le yaar ‘ :)
