A relaxing and peaceful Sunday Brunch at Uday Suites, Shankumugham

After taking a conscious break from all food tasting and culinary adventures for the last six months or so, when we got invited for the new introduction of Sunday Brunch at Uday Suites, the Airport Hotel at Shankumukham, it was a nice way to start this festive season’s food adventure at their pool facing restaurant.

We reached UDS Suites around 11:30 am and spent a good time around the pool while Executive Chef, Faisal Basheer was busy making the final arrangements of the impressive and extensive spread of food. We started off with the welcome drink - fresh refreshing Pineapple juice which I opted for and  Vanilla milkshake - children’s choice.

The breakfast part of the brunch had Battura /channa masala, chicken sausage/blueberry pancake and ‘The kids corner’ had mini veg burgers, finger sandwich, veg studdle and cheesy veg balls. The cheesy balls were super cheesy and we all freaked out on those. Chicken sausages were good too - very mildly spiced. They also have a very good bakery section with lots of variety of bread, cheese/chocolate croissants, fruit cakes, cinnamon rolls, brioche, bread(white/brown), custard Danish and doughnuts.

Soup section had two varieties – ‘Spicy tomato and drumstick soup’ and ‘Roasted pumpkin with confit chicken’ I had tomato soup which was thick and had good flavour and soft inside pulp of drumstick. Something different and a new item for me. There was a wide range of soup sticks to choose from. The live Grill station had bbq grilles chicken which was not at all spicy, masala grilles fish which was very spicy and teriyaki grilled vegetables which very crispy and vibrant in colours. Salad section had some good options – in non-veg, they had Caramelised apple and hot chicken salad (soft juicy caramelised apple with shredded chicken and Pesto Seafood salad (Tuna fish) Veg section the options were Mexican coleslaw/kimchi (did not have that punch usually associated with kimchi) /carrot and raisin salad.

Coming to the Lunch part of brunch  - Main course in Non Veg section had 4 items - Thai chicken green curry – had lovely gingery flavour and smooth rich gravy of coconut milk, , Beef stroganoff – Russian  dish of sautéed crunchy pieces of beef served in a sauce with sour cream, Wok tossed chilly seafood  - mix of calamari, and fish and  Malabari meen unda curry. I had Chicken and Beef dishes with wheat bread which was a perfect combo to enjoy the distinct flavours of the sauces.  Rice Section had  - Pad Thai Veg noodle, Bow Tie Pasta with ragout of tomato & pepper, Masala Pulao and Plain Rice. Noodles and Pasta were hit among children whereas spicy Pulao was the winner for me J

Main course in Veg Section had - Cottage cheese with Italian sauce – this dish was fantastic with Panner which melts in mouth and creamy sauce,   Bhindi Jaipuri – Crisp deep fried Okra with besan coating, Gujrathi dal palak – thick, healthy comfort food, Kallai Potato Pal curry – something similar to Kerala veg stew in coconut milk distinct flavours of Bay leaf and cardamom, Gobi Manchurian – could have been better, Cashew Croquets, Vendakkai Theeyal – Orka in spicy fried coconut paste gravy. There is also live counter for Roti/Naan/Puri/Baturra/ Vellayappams.

Dessert section again had a widespread to choose from - Minty choco tart, Strawberry cream roll, Arabian Baklava, soft and juicy Gulab Jamuns, Rangede coconut burfi, etc. The chocolate balls with the silver top resembling Kala Jamun, Chocolate Lollypop and The watermelon jelly was a big hit among children, The poached apple had the perfect sweetness and the opera pastry just melted in the mouth. A very satisfying brunch, the service was prompt and the people were very courteous. The dining hall is open space and the ambience was perfect with no loud music, people could talk peacefully and enjoy the food.

The Sunday Brunch is priced at Rs.799/- with complimentary use of the swimming pool (there is a small kids pool also). It is a perfect weekend break for a peaceful and relaxing time with family.
